Stripping out the old bathroom and fitting a new suite, with tiling, flooring and finishing.
New showers and enclosures, shower trays, walk-in showers and wet rooms.
Replacing a bath, toilet, basin or vanity unit, and new taps and valves.
A bathroom refit usually involves several trades: a plumber for the pipework, an electrician for lighting, extractor fans and any electric shower, plus a tiler, a plasterer and sometimes a carpenter. Some fitters handle the whole job and bring in their own trades, while others only do the plumbing. Ask who will manage the project and whether the price includes every trade, the waste removal and making good.
Choose your shower to suit your hot water system. A combi boiler supplies hot water on demand, so the shower's flow depends on the boiler and your mains pressure. A tank-fed system may need a pump for a decent shower, and an electric shower needs its own circuit from the consumer unit. Reading's water is hard, so thermostatic valves and shower heads need descaling over time. A scale reducer, or a valve that's easy to service, makes life easier.
Electrical work in bathrooms is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in many cases, so use an electrician registered with a scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT, who can self-certify it. Building regulations also require ventilation, usually an extractor fan, when a new bathroom is created. If you're adding a bathroom where there wasn't one, or moving the toilet a long way from the soil stack, ask whether building control needs to be told.
If your home was built before 2000, some textured ceilings, old floor tiles, boxing and pipe lagging may contain asbestos. Ask your fitter to check before work starts, and if they suspect asbestos, get it tested and follow the HSE's guidance before anything is disturbed.
A typical bathroom takes one to three weeks, depending on its size and how much is changing. Get at least three quotes that cover the same work, and agree stage payments rather than paying in full upfront. Reviews on Trade Pilot come from real, invoiced jobs, so you can see how other homeowners rated a fitter's work.
